A free day at last! In Helsinki you don´t have to go far to find nature: the forests and lakes of Nuuksio National Park are about an hour away by public transport. Or you could hop on a ferry and spend the day by the sea. Let´s see how Lucas and his friends spend their day off!

 

 

RETKI NUUKSIOON – A HIKE TO NUUKSIO

 

Listen to the dialogue:

Aino:  Lucas, onko sinulla lauantaina luentoja tai muuta ohjelmaa?

Lucas:  Ei ole. Lauantai on ihan vapaa.

Aino:  Lähdetäänkö retkelle Nuuksioon? Siellä on metsää, järviä ja hyviä polkuja.

Lucas:  Mahtava idea! Lähdetään!

Aino:  Minä teen eväät: voileipiä ja pullaa. Otan myös kaakaota termarissa.

Lucas:  Minä tuon makkaraa. Siellä saa varmaan paistaa makkaraa?

Aino:  Saa, nuotiopaikoilla. Mennään ensin junalla Espooseen ja sieltä bussilla perille. Tavataan Rautatieasemalla puoli yhdeksältä.

Lucas:  Missä kohtaa? Asemalla on aina tungosta. Miten minä löydän sinut?

Aino:  Odotan sinua ison kellon alla. Tiedät varmaan, missä se on?

Lucas:  Joo, tiedän. Nähdään siellä!

 

 

 

 

Aino saa idean. Voisivatko he pyytää mukaan myös Sofian, Mikon ja Eetun, Ainon pikkuveljen, joka on Helsingissä käymässä? Onko kaikilla lauantaina aikaa?

 

Aino: Me lähdetään lauantaina retkelle Nuuksioon. Tulkaa mukaan!

Eetu:  Mahtavaa! Olen vielä lauantaina Helsingissä, joten tulen mukaan. Mitä minä toisin?

Sofia:  Kiva idea! Missä me tavataan? Ja mihin aikaan?

Mikko:  Voi, minä en ehdi. Minun täytyy korjata pyörä ja tehdä koodausprojekti valmiiksi.

Sofia:  Lauantaina? Älä viitsi. Tule nyt! Kerkeät koodata sunnuntaina.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lauantaiaamuna Aino odottaa ison kellon alla. Lucas, Sofia ja Eetu tulevat ajoissa – ja Mikkokin on mukana! Sää on kirkas ja raikas. He kävelevät metsässä monta tuntia ja näkevät jopa kaksi peuraa. Nuotiolla on aika syödä. Voi ei, makkarat ovat Lucaksen jääkaapissa! No, ei se haittaa. Eväitä riittää kaikille.

 

 

 

LAUTALLA SUOMENLINNAAN? – BY FERRY TO SUOMENLINNA?

Listen to the dialogue:

Lucas:  Sofia, sinä opiskelet arkkitehtuuria. Mikä on Helsingin hienoin paikka?

Sofia:  Vaikea kysymys! Mutta ehkä Suomenlinna. Mennään sinne yhdessä, niin näkisit itse vanhat muurit ja talot.

Lucas:  Kuulostaa hyvältä. Onko matka kallis?

Sofia:  Ei ole. Lautta kulkee Kauppatorilta monta kertaa tunnissa, ja siellä käy sama lippu kuin ratikassa. Matka kestää vain vartin.

Lucas:  Sovittu. Mennään sunnuntaina!

Sofia:  Selvä. Minä katson aikataulun. Tavataan Kauppatorilla lautan lähellä kymmentä vaille yksitoista. Ota lämmin takki mukaan, merellä tuulee!

TAVATA (4), TAPAAN – TO MEET (SOMEONE)

 

Watch out: the consonant change v → p in every personal form (strong grade).

 

TAVATA, PRESENT TENSE

(minä) tapaan = I meet

(sinä) tapaat = you meet

(hän) tapaa = he / she meets

(me) tapaamme = we meet

(te) tapaatte = you (pl.) meet

(he) tapaavat = they meet

 

Missä te tapaatte?

Where are you meeting?

 

Aino tapaa Lucaksen asemalla.

Aino meets Lucas at the station.

 

Sofia ja Lucas tapaavat torilla.

Sofia and Lucas meet at the market square.

 

 

 

 

 

THE “MENNÄÄN” FORM: THREE JOBS

 

1) LET´S DO IT!

 

Lähdetään Nuuksioon!  

Let´s go to Nuuksio!

Syödään nuotiolla! 

Let´s eat by the campfire!

 

 

2) THE EVERYDAY “WE” FORM

In spoken Finnish you hear this all the time instead of the -mme form.

 

Me lähdetään retkelle. 

We´re going on a hike.

Written style: Me lähdemme retkelle.

 

Mihin aikaan me tavataan? 

What time shall we meet?

Written style: Mihin aikaan me tapaamme?

 

 

3) THE PASSIVE (PEOPLE IN GENERAL)

 

Suomessa saunotaan paljon.    

People take saunas a lot in Finland.

Metsässä poimitaan marjoja.      

Berries are picked in the forest.

 

 

 

OBJECT FORMS OF THE PERSONAL PRONOUNS

A personal pronoun as an object has just two options: its own t-form (minut) or the partitive (minua). Pronouns have no n-object.

 

t-form – partitive

minut – minua

sinut – sinua

hänet – häntä

meidät – meitä

teidät – teitä

heidät – heitä

 

Haen teidätasemalta.  

I´ll pick you (all) up from the station.

Haen Sofianasemalta.   

I´ll pick Sofia up from the station.

Aino tapaa meidät kellon alla.   

Aino meets us under the clock.

Aino tapaa Eetun kellon alla.

Aino meets Eetu under the clock.

 

 

Keep in mind!

In a negative sentence, and after verbs that always take a partitive object, the pronoun is in the partitive too.

 

En näe teitä.  

I can´t see you.

Sofia auttaa minua.  

Sofia is helping me.

Odotatko meitä?  

Are you waiting for us?

 

 

 

 

 

                    

WHEN THE N-OBJECT IS NOT USED

An n-object never appears when the verb is

 

1) AN IMPERATIVE (A COMMAND)

 

Ota kartta!  

Take a map!

Hän ottaa karttan.  

She takes a map.

 

2) THE “MENNÄÄN” FORM

Otetaan kartta!         

Let´s take a map!

Me otetaan kartta.

We´re taking a map.

Written style: Me otamme karttan.

 

 

 

3) TÄYTYY / PITÄÄ + INFINITIVE

Minun täytyy ottaa kartta.

I have to take a map.

Minä otan karttan.  

I take a map.

 

 

 

 

WHEN THE PARTITIVE OBJECT IS A MUST

1) NEGATIVE SENTENCES

En ota karttaa.     

I´m not taking a map.

Älä ota karttaa!     

Don´t take a map!

Ei oteta karttaa!   

Let´s not take a map!

Meidän ei tarvitse ottaa karttaa.      

We don´t need to take a map.

 

2) AN UNSPECIFIED AMOUNT

Minä otan kaakaota. 

I´m taking (some) cocoa.

Ota vettä!         

Take (some) water!

Meidän täytyy ostaa leipää.  

We have to buy (some) bread.

 

3) AFTER VERBS THAT ALWAYS WANT THE PARTITIVE

 

Voit odottaa minua.   

You can wait for me.

Rakastan metsää.      

I love the forest.

 

 

 

 

 

MUKAAN (ALONG) – MUKANA (WITH)

 

mukaan + tulla, lähteä, ottaa

Tule mukaan, Mikko!   

Come along, Mikko!

Ota sadetakki mukaan!

olla mukana (to be along, to have with you)

Mikkokin on mukana.
