Now it is time to see Lucas's own room, and the bathroom too!

Listen to the dialogue:

Sofia:  No niin, tässä on sinun huone. Se ei ole kovin iso, mutta ikkuna on suuri.

Lucas:  Kiva! Täällä on valoisaa. Ja sänky on tosi mukava. Mitä tuo on suomeksi?

Sofia:  Se on vaatekaappi.

Lucas:  Vaatekaappi. Ahaa! Ranskaksi se on armoire.

Sofia:  Ja italiaksi armadio! Tässä on työpöytä ja pieni yöpöytä, ja tuossa on kirjahylly.

Lucas:  Työpöytä, yöpöytä, kirjahylly… Selvä!

Sofia:  Ja tuolla nurkassa on vielä vanha nojatuoli.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lucaksen huone on pieni mutta valoisa. Siellä on sänky, yöpöytä, työpöytä, tuoli, vaatekaappi, kirjahylly ja vanha nojatuoli. Ikkuna on iso.

Huoneessa ei ole mattoa, lamppua eikä peiliä.

To say “in a language”, add –ksi (after the stem) to the language name:

Lucas:  Mikko, missä kylpyhuone on?

Mikko:  Tuossa, eteisen vieressä. Siellä on suihku, vessa ja pesuallas.

Lucas:  Entä pyykit? Missä pesukone on?

Mikko:  Pesukone on kellarissa, pesulassa. Siellä on myös meidän yhteinen sauna.

Lucas:  Sauna! Mahtavaa!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kylpyhuone on pieni. Siellä on vain suihku, vessa, pesuallas ja peili, mutta ei ammetta.

Pesula ja yhteinen sauna ovat kellarissa.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ASUNNON HUONEET – THE ROOMS OF A FLAT

When you open the front door of a Finnish home, you step first into the eteinen (entrance hall). Shoes come off here, and jackets are hung on the coat rack, in Finnish naulakko.

 

 

keittiö       Meidän keittiössä on iso jääkaappi.

eteinen      Eteisessä on naulakko ja peili.

olohuone      Olohuoneessa on sohva ja kaksi nojatuolia.

makuuhuone        Lucaksen makuuhuone on pieni mutta valoisa.

kylpyhuone         Kylpyhuoneessa on suihku, mutta ei ammetta.

 

 

 

 

 

 

It is getting late. Lucas wants to unpack his suitcase, so the others leave him to settle in.

GRAMMAR

HERE AND THERE: TÄÄLLÄ, TUOLLA, SIELLÄ

tuolla = over there

Use it for a place you can point at, one that everyone present can see.

Kirjahylly on tuolla nurkassa.  The bookshelf is over there in the corner.

 

 

täällä = here  

Use it for the place where you are right now.

Täällä on lämmin.  It is warm in here.

 

 

siellä = there

Use it for a place that has been mentioned but is somewhere else.

Sofian perhe asuu Bolognassa. Siellä on lämmin.  Sofia's family lives in Bologna. It is warm there.

 

 

 

“THERE IS NO …” SENTENCES

When something is missing from a place, the missing thing goes into the partitive.

 

Place + ei ole + missing thing (the missing thing is in the partitive)

Lucaksen huoneessa ei ole mattoa eikä lamppua.

Keittiössä ei ole pesukonetta.

Kylpyhuoneessa ei ole ikkunaa.

 

 

 

 

 

 

VOCABULARY

 

ei … eikä     not … and not; neither … nor

Kylpyhuoneessa ei ole ammetta eikä saunaa. There is no bathtub and no sauna in the bathroom.

öitä! – night! (casual good night)

Kauniita unia! – Sweet dreams!

samoin – the same to you

vaatekaappi – wardrobe

työpöytä – desk

yöpöytä – bedside table

nurkka – corner

makuuhuone – bedroom

kylpyhuone – bathroom

eteinen     hall, entrance (you take off your shoes here)

vessa – toilet, WC (say: vee-see)
