Listen and repeat:

Aino:  Moi Mikko, moi Sofia! Tässä on Lucas. Hän on teidän uusi kämppis.

Sofia:  Moi Lucas! Tervetuloa meille!

Mikko:  Terve! Minä olen Mikko. Hauska tutustua.

Lucas:  Kiitos! Samoin, hauska tutustua.

Sofia:  Lucas, oletko sinä ranskalainen?

Lucas:  Olen. Minä olen Lyonista. Entä sinä, oletko sinä suomalainen?

Sofia:  En ole. Minä olen italialainen, Bolognasta. Mikko on suomalainen.

Mikko:  Niin olen. Minä olen kotoisin Jyväskylästä.

 Listen and repeat:

Mikko:  Sofia asuu huoneessa numero neljä ja minä huoneessa numero kolme.

Lucas:  Entä tuo huone, numero yksi? Onko se minun?

Sofia:  Ei ole. Siinä huoneessa asuu Jonas, mutta hän on nyt lomalla Saksassa.

Mikko:  Jonas on kotoisin Berliinistä.

Aino:  Lucas, sinun huone on tuossa. Ovessa on numero kaksi.

Lucas:  Ahaa, numero kaksi. Selvä!

Lucas:  Aino, asutko sinä myös tässä asunnossa?

Aino:  En asu. Minä asun naapurissa.

Lucas:  Ai! Sinä olet siis minun naapuri.

Aino:  Niin olen. Minun ovi on ihan vieressä.

Lucaksen kämppikset ovat Sofia Italiasta, Mikko Jyväskylästä ja Jonas Saksasta. Aino asuu naapurissa.

Aino has a law exam coming up and must go home to study, but she will see Lucas again tomorrow…

Aino:  No niin, minä lähden nyt. Nähdään huomenna, Lucas!

Lucas:  Kiitos paljon, Aino! Hei hei!

Sofia:  Moikka, Aino!

Aino:  Moi moi! Nähdään taas.

Which room does Sofia live in?

Hän asuu huoneessa numero neljä.

She lives in room number four.

COUNTING FROM 1 TO 10

Listen, then say each number aloud. The hyphens show the syllables, and the stress is always on the first one.

1 yksi (yk-si)      2 kaksi (kak-si)     3 kolme (kol-me)    neljä (nel-jä)     5 viisi (vii-si)     6 kuusi (kuu-si)

7 seitsemän (seit-se-män)    kahdeksan (kah-dek-san)    9 yhdeksän (yh-dek-sän)   10 kymmenen (kym-me-nen)

LITTLE REACTION WORDS

Ai!    Oh! (a small surprise)

Ahaa!     Aha, now I get it!

TÄSSÄ VAI TÄÄLLÄ?

tässä    here, at this exact spot       Tässä on sinun avain.

täällä    here, in this place or area            Sofia ja Mikko asuvat täällä.

SAYING GOODBYE

Moikka!

Bye! (casual)

Hei hei!

Bye now!

Nähdään taas!

See you again!

Nähdään pian!

See you soon!

Tip: “Moikka” and “moi moi” are relaxed, everyday words for friends and neighbours.

GRAMMAR

MISSÄ? – WHERE? (IN WHICH PLACE?)

To say that something is in or inside a place, add the inessive ending -ssa / -ssä to the word. It answers the question missä?:

keittiössä                in the kitchen

Jyväskylässä          in Jyväskylä

Oulussa           in Oulu

THE HUONE TYPE: e → ee-nouns

Case endings are attached to the stem of a noun, and the stem is not always the same as the dictionary form. Many nouns ending in -e get a long -ee- in the stem, and then the ending follows:

Dictionary form: perhe       a family

Stem + ending: perhee+ssä      in a family

THE WORDS uusi, käsi → uude-, käde-

Dictionary form:    käsi     a hand

Stem before -t:     käde+t    (plural: hands)

In the plural, the ending -t is joined to the stem, so any change in the stem shows up here too:

opiskelija

a/the student

opiskelijat

the students

iso huone

a/the big room

isot huoneet

the big rooms

Agreement

An adjective or pronoun standing in front of a noun takes the same ending as the noun. In short: if the noun gets -ssa or -t, the word before it gets it too.

keittiössä

in a kitchen

ssä keittiössä

in this kitchen

kylässä

in a village

tuossa kylässä

in that village

ikkunat

the windows

pienet ikkunat

the small windows

mikä keittiö?

which kitchen?

missä keittiössä?

in which kitchen?

THIS, THAT, IT: TÄMÄ, TUO, SE

Two of them change their shape in the inessive:

tämä · tuo · se

tässä (irregular)    tuossa (regular)   siinä (irregular)

Lucas asuu tässä asunnossa.

Lucas lives in this flat.

Mikko istuu siinä tuolissa.

Mikko is sitting in that chair.

ASUA AND ISTUA – two verbs of type 1

minä asun · istun

sinä asut · istut

hän asuu · istuu

me asumme · istumme

te asutte · istutte

he asuvat · istuvat

Good to know: Word lists show the verb type in brackets after the basic form, for example istua (1), nukkua (1).
