MITÄ SINÄ OPISKELET?
WHAT DO YOU STUDY?
Lucas opiskelee ympäristötiedettä. Mitä hänen uudet naapurinsa ja kurssikaverinsa opiskelevat?
Listen to the dialogue:
Lucas: Hei kaikki! Minä olen Lucas ja opiskelen ympäristötiedettä. Entä te?
Aino: Minä opiskelen oikeustiedettä ja vähän ruotsia.
Juan: Minä opiskelen geologiaa ja maantiedettä.
Mikko: Minä taas opiskelen tietojenkäsittelytiedettä.
Sofia: Ja minä opiskelen arkkitehtuuria.
Lotta: Minä opiskelen biologiaa ja kemiaa.
OPISKELLA (3) + PARTITIVE: WHAT DO YOU STUDY?
| Subject → Minä opiskelen… | in English | |
|---|---|---|
| ympäristötiede | ympäristötiedettä | environmental science |
| tietojenkäsittelytiede | tietojenkäsittelytiedettä | computer science |
| arkkitehtuuri | arkkitehtuuria | architecture |
| ympäristöoikeus | ympäristöoikeutta | environmental law |
| kemia | kemiaa | chemistry |
| filosofia | filosofiaa | philosophy |
| maantiede | maantiedettä | geography |
Aino opiskelee oikeustiedettä.
Juan opiskelee geologiaa.
Listen to the dialogue:
Lucas: Minä osaan vain muutaman sanan suomea. Entä te?
Mikko: Minä olen jyväskyläläinen, joten osaan suomea tietysti hyvin.
Sofia: Mikko, sinä olet suomalainen, se on eri asia! Minä osaan lukea vähän, mutta puhuminen on vaikeaa. Siksi minä käyn suomen kurssilla.
Mikko: Sofia, sinä puhut jo tosi hyvin. Ei tarvitse olla ujo!
Listen to the dialogue:
Lucas: Suomen kielioppi on aika vaikea. Minun täytyy harjoitella joka päivä.
Mikko: Ei sinun tarvitse stressata. Ympäristötieteen kurssit ovat englanniksi, joten sinä pärjäät hyvin.
Lucas: Totta, mutta täällä Helsingissä minä haluan puhua suomea myös kaupassa ja kahvilassa.
Mikko: Hyvä idea! Sinun kannattaa mennä suomen kurssille. Siellä oppii nopeasti.
The study details in this story are invented. For real information on degree courses taught in English, check your university's website.
Lucas: Mistä minä löydän suomen kurssin?
Aino: Kielikeskuksesta. Mene kielikeskuksen toimistoon ja kysy neuvojalta.
Lucas: Missä kielikeskus on?
Aino: Pääkirjaston vieressä. Toimisto on kolmannessa kerroksessa, huone 305.
ORDINALS (FIRST, SECOND, THIRD…)
Every ordinal except ensimmäinen (1st)and toinen (2nd) has the final letter –sin its basic form.
In figures, a full stop after the number shows that it is an ordinal:
5 = viisi
5. = viides
Ordinals 1–10
1. ensimmäinen 2. toinen 3. kolmas 4. neljäs 5. viides
6. kuudes 7. seitsemäs 8. kahdeksas 9. yhdeksäs 10. kymmenes
Ordinals 11–19
Put -toista after the ordinal of the last digit. Watch out for 11th and 12th, which are built from yksi and kaksi:
11. yhdestoista (not ensimmäinentoista)
12. kahdestoista (not toinentoista)
14. neljästoista, 15. viidestoista…
Tens: 20th, 30th, 40th…
For the tens, add -kymmenes to the ordinal. Again, 20th is built from kaksi, not toinen:
20. kahdeskymmenes
50. viideskymmenes
60. kuudeskymmenes
31. kolmaskymmenesensimmäinen
42. neljäskymmenestoinen
55. viideskymmenesviides
SANOA (1) + -LLE SAYING SOMETHING TO SOMEONE
Neuvoja sanoo minulle / Sofialle…
The adviser says to me / tells Sofia…
Aino sanoo Lucakselle, että kielikeskus on kirjaston vieressä.
Aino tells Lucas that the language centre is next to the library.
GRAMMAR
NOUN TYPE -US / -YS – rakkaus, terveys
These nouns have a vowel just before -us / -ys. They usually name a quality, e.g. rakkaus 'love' from rakas 'dear'.
Basic form: rakkaus, terveys
Partitive: rakkautta, terveyttä
Stem: rakkaude-, terveyde-
MUST – SENTENCES WITH TÄYTYY
Finnish says 'must' or 'have to' with a fixed pattern. The person who must do something goes into the genitive, the verb täytyy ('must') never changes (it is always the 3rd person singular form, with no personal ending), and the action that follows is in the infinitive.
WHO (GENITIVE) + TÄYTYY + WHAT (INFINITIVE)
Minun täytyy herätä aikaisin.
Sinun täytyy ostaa sanakirja.
Hänen täytyy kirjoittaa essee.
Meidän täytyy siivota keittiö.
Teidän täytyy tulla ajoissa.
Heidän täytyy odottaa bussia.
Lucaksen täytyy harjoitella suomea.
Täytyykö sinun lähteä jo?
Do you have to leave already?
DON'T HAVE TO – EI TARVITSE
To say that something is not necessary, use ei tarvitse ('need not').
The negative word stays ei for every person: minun ei, sinun ei, meidän ei…
Genitive + EI TARVITSE + infinitive
Minun ei tarvitse tehdä läksyjä tänään.
Sinun ei tarvitse ostaa uutta kirjaa.
Hänen ei tarvitse kiirehtiä.
Meidän ei tarvitse siivota tänään.
Teidän ei tarvitse odottaa.
Heidän ei tarvitse tulla huomenna.
Mikon ei tarvitse opiskella ruotsia.
Also useful:
The verb kannattaa (it pays to, it is worth it) works in exactly the same way:
who (genitive) + kannattaa (yes) / ei kannata (no) + the action (infinitive).
Sinun kannattaa ostaa opiskelijakortti.
Sinun ei kannata ostaa uutta sanakirjaa.
NOUN TYPE -OS / -ÖS, -US / -YS – kerros, harjoitus
Basic form: kerros, harjoitus
Partitive: kerrosta, harjoitusta
Stem: kerrokse-, harjoitukse-
Kielikeskus on kolmannessa kerroksessa.
Lucas tekee harjoituksen kotona.
Opettaja vastaa kysymykseen.
THE GENITIVE SINGULAR (-N)
To form the genitive singular, add nto the stem of the word, not to the basic form.
kirja → kirjan
Aino → Ainon
ruotsi → ruotsin
järvi → järven
kerros → kerroksen
Watch out! Foreign names that end in a consonant get an extra -i before the ending (names in -s, like Lucas, work like Finnish -us words: Lucaksen):
Erik → Erikin
Daniel → Danielin
WHEN DO WE USE THE GENITIVE?
You need the genitive, for example:
to show whose something is
Sofian kynä
Sofia's pen
before most postpositions
Mikon kanssa
with Mikko
in 'must' sentences with täytyy
Ainon täytyy lukea.
Aino has to read.
